The European Senior Online Academy follows Jean Monnet’s mission statement regarding the EU: “Not to unite states but to connect people.” The college aims to plan and devise encounters and continuing education of people from 55 onwards in Europe.
One basic element are seminars which regularly take place in different European countries. These seminars enable face-to-face encounters with experts as well as different elderly people and they combine lectures, conducted tours and panels. The second basic element is the online feature: every attendance seminar is accompanied by a learning platform which documents the respective content but also provides additional information.
Thus ESOA represents an innovative learning method for all those senior citizens who would like to take actively part in the process of European integration and to allow Europe to benefit from their experiences and qualifications.
One focus point is the topic “Narrating history in Europe.” The personal experiences and points of view of a generation which has experienced the evolution of Europe in a completely different manner than today’s youth are being preserved by telling, reprocessing and archiving them on the platform. By this means, the ESOA makes this generation contribute to developing the EU further and, at the same time, saves their valuable experience from oblivion.
