European Route of Megalithic Culture

Im 4. und 5. Jahrtausend v. Chr. entstanden in Europa von Südskandinavien bis in den Mittelmeerraum monumentale Steinbauten, die sowohl zu kultischen Zwecken als auch als Begräbnisplätze genutzt wurden. Sie künden von der Entschlossenheit ihrer Erbauer, sesshaft zu werden, Siedlungen zu errichten und Ackerbau und Viehzucht zu betreiben. Im Zuge dieser sogenannten neolithischen Revolution (Neolithikum = Jungsteinzeit) wurden die Grundlagen für unsere heutige Lebensweise gelegt, entstanden Handel und Handwerk und erstmals in der Geschichte Europas die Anfänge eines territorialen Denkens. Die Denkmale der Megalithkultur stellen heute einzigartige Zeugnisse aus dieser Epoche dar. Sie sind die ältesten bis heute erhaltenen Kulturdenkmale Europas und zeigen, dass der Megalithgedanke ein verbindendes Element in der Entwicklungsgeschichte Europas ist - mit einem hohen identitätsstiftenden Potential für nachfolgende Epochen, dem wir eine Unmenge an Mythen und Sagen im Zuge der Oral History verdanken. Die European Routes of Megalithic Culture sind ein kulturtouristisches Netzwerk aus Archäologen, Touristikern und Naturwissenschaftlern. Sie alle folgen den Spuren dieser frühen Europäer, entwickeln neue touristische Angebote, betreiben Museen und Open-Air-Ausstellungen und kooperieren mit anderen europäischen Kultureinrichtungen. Seit 2013 gehören sie zu den offiziellen Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.
