Amber Vein
An important project for Riga, the European Capital of Culture Riga 2014, is the rediscovery of the historic Amber Road. A team of experts conducted an expedition along the 1700-km ancient trade route passing through seven European countries – the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. From Prague to Zurich, they searched for the influence of Baltic amber on the places along the ancient trade route. At the same time, they formed contacts with the scientists, directors of museums, and individuals interested in the history of amber to prepare for closer collaboration. This expedition is meant to kick off a stronger cultural collaboration between the cities along the ancient Amber Road, thus shedding greater light on the history of Europe and a common cultural heritage. At the same time, new connections are being formed between the cities of Europe.
