One of great contributions to humanity is the European model of cities, exemplary in terms of density, human scale and complexity. Public space, one of its most characteristic features is a mechanism both for improving the quality of life and for strengthening democracy since it brings together principles of equality of access, freedom of expression and pluralism. Today’s European city, however, is facing new challenges arising from its exponential growth and increasing social and cultural complexity and put in danger civic and collective health of our cities.
The European Prize for Urban Public Space (ww.publicspace.org)) is a biennial competition that aims to encourage the improvement of public space understood as a clear indicator of the civic and collective health of our cities. The Prize, founded in 2000 has become a permanent observatory of the transformation on public spaces in Europe and a gauge of the main concerns of European cities.
The Prize is organised by the Centre for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona in collaboration with The Architecture Foundation (London), the Architekturzentrum Wien (Vienna), the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine (Paris), the Museum of Finnish Architecture (Helsinki), the Deutsches Architektur (Frankfurt) and the Museum of Architecture and Design (Ljubljana).
Series of lectures, traveling exhibition and other activities linked to urban issues accompany the Prize.
